Oviedo is the geographical, political, business and cultural centre of a land known throughout all of the Spain for its unique, breathtaking landscape (wild, authentic and full of subtle changes and contrasts).
The most interesting spots in Asturias can easily be accessed in little time from Oviedo by train or by car. The beaches of Gijón and the region of Avilés can be reached in just half an hour, the Cantabrian coast in an hour, and the western coast (on the other side of the region) in just over an hour. The Museo del Jurásico de Asturias (MUJA) (Asturian Jurassic Museum), can be reached from Oviedo via the Autovía del Cantábrico in just over sixty minutes and is one of the main attractions to be found on the western coast.
This area of the Region has the most important and oldest dinosaur remains to be found in Spain. The Museo de la Minería (Mining Museum) in Sotrondio, only half an hour's journey from the capital, is another point of interest which attracts more and more visitors every year and offers a truly impressive reproduction of a mine shaft. The Museo de la Sidra (Cider Museum) (the traditional drink from Asturias which has just been officially recognised by the European Union) in Nava, has also seen a considerable increase in the number of visitors since it was inaugurated.
Muniellos forest (which can only be visited by making a prior reservation in the Consejería de Medio Ambiente (Department for the Environment)), the Parque de Somied (Somied National park), the Parque de Redes and the Parque de los Picos de Europa are all worthy of being visited by nature lovers who are visiting Oviedo. These emblematic National parks can be reached after a two hour drive.
Asturias only has one million inhabitants and thus offers the visitor a land where the role of nature is still essential (it is the Spanish region which has the highest percentage of protected natural areas - both National Parks and places of common interest (LIC)).
Picos de Europa, with the emblematic Naranjo de Bulnes, offers a spectacular landscape of both massifs (the western and central), within the borders of Asturias. 2000 metre high mountains rise up near to the Asturian coastline. It is, without doubt, one of the images that best characterises Asturias.
The improvement of the road network has converted Oviedo into an ideal spot for visiting the most interesting regions in the area, either to the east (Llanes, Arenas de Cabrales, the Museo del Jurásico de Colunga, Cangas de Onís, the Santuario Mariano de Covadonga or Lagos de Enol and La Ercina are all worth a visit) or to the west (with such different spots/towns as Cudillero, Puerto de Vega, Viavélez, Cabo Blanco, los Oscos and the regions defined by the rivers Eo and Navia, which hold some of the least well-known treasures to be found in the diverse Asturian geography).
Of course if you are visiting the central area of the region, using Oviedo as your base is even more justified. From the capital you can reach the beaches on the Costa Verde in approximately half an hour. Gijón, Avilés, Salinas, Candás and Luanco all offer a range of possibilities for tourists who are eager to explore. To the south-west Cangas del Narcea, Degaña and Ibias offer visitors the recently created Parque de Fuentes del Narcea , which offers, as from this summer, one of the longest routes in a natural area in Spain, covering more than 350 kilometres. Muniellos forest is another one of the gems to be found in this new national park. Another Asturian region which offers wild natural habitat is Teverga, one of the final points along the Senda del Oso (route of the bear). Montemayor forest, when going up the Puerto de Ventana (Ventana mountain pass) and the Puerto de San Lorenzo, are two spectacular spots to be found in this region, resting beneath the everwatchful eye of the Peña Sobia.
In short, the Asturian "Natural Paradise" offers an endless array of places and sights which are outstanding because of their spectacular, simple, imposing, yet always welcoming beauty.
