In the XIII century, when Fernando III unificated the Leon and Castilla Kingdoms crowns started to be in Oviedo a Jewish community. In the same century was Oviedo´s expansion and growth, at time of the Santiago de Compostela´s pilgrimages and Oviedo´s San Salvador pilgrimages, obligatory route for Sant James´ Way.
We don´t know exactly date to come jewish to Asturias. According to the documents that we have today, in Asturias we have references in the XI century, Coyanza´s Council in Oviedo the year 1050.
In the book «Asturias Jewish History» Oviedo´s by-laws of 1274 situated a specific district for the jewish, Socastiello dictrict. Its limits was: since Castle Door at Socastielo New Door.
The Royal Castle and Fortress were, in Oviedo XIII century, in the same place that today is the Telephone Company Building, near Porlier Square, Castle Door was at left side and the Socastiello New Door could be near San Juan street or at finally of Cimadevilla street because they are in de documents with the name of ¨New Door¨.For the moment we had not found nothing about that ancient jewish quarter.
Oviedo´s City Council donated in 1999 the building known as «La Casina» in El Fontán at Principality of Asturias Jewish Community. In this place there is a Jewish Cultural Center for the study, promotion and broadcasting of the jewish culture.
